For this musical work, Verdi utilized the national anthems of several European nations.

During the post-war Red Scare, the US government crudely censored "The Internationale" (the then-anthem of the USSR) out of the film. The version continued to be released without any acknowledgment of censorship. The uncensored version was thought to have been lost until a print was rediscovered in Alaska.

This rediscovered print has been digitally placed back into the film (at 13:08) to give an idea of what it would have originally looked like before it was censored. The audio is from a vinyl recording which was never censored.
